Tech: Google Nexus 10

Tech: Google Nexus 10

NEW YORK: When I first turned on Google's new tablet computer, I immediately thought of it as a mere conduit to Google services.

Besides giving you quick access to Gmail and YouTube, the Nexus 10 steers you to digital movies, books and other content available for sale through Google's online Play store.

Because of that, I wasn't thinking of the Nexus 10 as an alternative to Apple's general-purpose iPad - even with a price tag that's $100 cheaper, starting at $399. It took more thought and time with the Nexus to change that perception. After all, apps available for Android smartphones work on the tablet as well.

Still, the Nexus really shines when it comes to media - especially content bought through Google.

For the past year, Google has been trying to challenge Apple and Amazon by selling digital content.

The Play store is Google's version of iTunes for Apple devices. There, you can get a variety of apps, some free and some for a small fee. You can buy or rent movies and obtain books, magazines and music. Google isn't satisfied with building search engines and selling ads. It wants a bigger role in the digital economy.

Over the summer, Google came out with a 7-inch (17.5-centimeter) tablet called the Nexus 7. Just as Apple made an iPad Mini that's about the size of the Nexus 7, Google is now selling a larger version of the Nexus, about the size of Apple's regular iPad. It starts shipping this week.

On the Nexus 10, icons at the bottom of the screen emphasise Google's media products available through Play. Click on a picture of film to watch movies, headphones to listen to music and a book to, well, read books. Another icon gets you to the Play store to obtain more content and apps.

The Nexus has a rubberised back and fits more snuggly on my lap than the metal-backed iPad. In my hands, I don't feel as if the Nexus would slip out and crash on to the hard floor, as I continually do with the iPad.

There are front-facing speakers going up and down both sides of the Nexus, compared with just one tucked in a corner on the back of an iPad. You feel more immersed watching video with sound coming right at you from the entire device. I hadn't considered that a problem on the iPad, but I began to notice it once I played video on the tablets side by side.

The screen measures 10.1 inches (25.6 centimeters) diagonally, which is more than the iPad's 9.7 inches (24.6 centimeters). But the screen isn't any larger because while it's about an inch wider in horizontal mode, it's also about a half-inch less in height. This works well for widescreen content, which completely fills the screen. On the iPad, the latest movies and TV shows often have black bars, no matter how you hold the tablet. In some cases, you might see the sides of video cut off to fit the space, as I did watching this week's episode of "Revenge" on Hulu. Again, I hadn't considered that a problem on the iPad, until I began to notice it.

What makes the tablet's shape good for movies makes it less-than-ideal for magazines, though. There's wasted space on the top and the bottom for magazines on the Nexus. But I watch TV shows and movies online more often than I read magazines digitally, so I'll let it slide.

As for books, text on the Nexus' screen comes out sharp. News sites and apps also look nice. The Nexus has a screen resolution of 300 pixels per inches, slightly better than the 264 ppi for the latest full-size iPad (which itself is far better than the 132 ppi on the older iPad 2 model still available).

True, there are other tablets designed as media players, too. Amazon.com Kindle Fire and Barnes and Barnes & Noble Nook HD come to mind, and both have larger versions out this month. But neither has the diversity of apps available for the Nexus and other full-fledge Android devices (The Kindle and the Nook run on modified versions of Android and restrict apps to what's available through their own online stores).

So what does that mean?

Apps on my Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone automatically appear on the Nexus 10 after signing in with the same Google account. I'll note that the Nexus 10 is also made by Samsung Electronics, even though it's branded Google.

Three of my apps, for AccuWeather, Citibank and Dunkin' Donuts, aren't compatible for unknown reasons. But those I use most often - Facebook, Instagram, Foursquare and a slew of other weather apps - all work on the Nexus. The companion app for the TV show " Dexter" also works, allowing me to play trivia games and watch video clips.

Not all apps have been specifically adapted for the tablet's larger screen, but they take advantage of the entire screen, nonetheless, thanks to the way Android lets software programmers build their apps in modules. All the content gets blown up and still looks decent.

Apple's store has a far wider selection of apps, though, including a half-dozen apps for exhibits at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. A search on Play comes up with only one.

The Nexus comes with the latest version of the Android operating system, version 4.2. It introduces a new feature for sharing tablets, the way family members can share Windows and Mac computers while keeping personalized settings. You no longer have to fight with a kid who constantly changes the volume or moves apps around. Now, just sign in as separate users.

The Nexus is a tad lighter, while the iPad promises longer battery life and has an option for cellular broadband for $130 more, plus the cost of data plans. Neither has a slot to expand memory with SD cards. Both have two cameras - 5 megapixels on the back for taking photos and video, and a lower-resolution one on the front for videoconferencing.

The iPad remains king among tablets, with its ease of use, variety of apps and dominance in the market. But challengers such as Google offer choice. The Nexus 10 is a good choice if you already have an Android phone and use a lot of Google services. That's especially true if you also watch a lot of movies and TV shows, but don't want to be limited to that.

Tech : Upgraded Aakash 2 is here, but will it reach the sky?

Tech : Upgraded Aakash 2 is here, but will it reach the sky?

“I had bought the first version of Aakash for my little sister, a school student, but within five days she refused to use it. It was such an underperforming tablet,” says Ankit Sharma, who runs his family restaurant in Navi Mumbai. Sharma adds that instead of being an alternative computing device, the original Aakash tablet PC became a pain for users, primarily because it had a very low-powered central processing unit (CPU) and the resistive touchscreen (unlike the capacitive screens on most smartphones and tablets today) that made navigation difficult.

“I tried to use the tablet to watch videos, read books — anything that did not require real interaction with the device — but it took forever for any web content to load, buffer and stream,” Sharma said. Asked about the new Aakash 2 that was unveiled recently, Sharma rues, “If only the company or the government had told buyers that within months of launching the original, there would be a better Aakash model in the market, we wouldn’t have wasted our money on the original one.”

In tablet PCs, screen resolution, computing power, battery and software functionality plus the apps are important, believe experts. Amit Goel, CEO, Knowledgefaber, a consulting and research firm, says, “Aakash tablet remains an attractive option for the government and education sector at the given price-points, but it will be able to achieve success only if it is able to meet specified quality requirements and qualifying tests.”

As per Knowledgefaber estimates, players like Micromax, Karbonn and HCL estimated to sell about 3.5 lakh units with majority of sales in the 7-inch category in 2012 — though Micromax & Karbonn have entered the tablet market only in 2012. Goel underlines, “A tablet is a highly aspirational product. It’s a 2nd computing machine for most. The game changes when you try to make it the first computing device for masses by lowering the cost. If it does not live up to the quality of service expected, it can backfire.”

That’s exactly what has happened with the original Aakash, which was designed, developed and manufactured by Datawind in partnership with IIT Rajasthan under the human resources and development ministry’s National Mission on Education through Information & Communication Technology.

Aakash 2 corrects a few of the mistakes the first one had, with its 1GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen and an upgraded battery that offers over three hours of normal usage. That’s a definite improvement from the original Aakash, which came with a 366 Mhz Connexant processor, 256 MB RAM and a resistive display screen which together slowed down the device’s performance. It runs on Android 4.0 operating system and has a front-facing VGA camera and built in Wi-Fi connectivity among other things. Aakash 2 has been developed under the aegis of IIT-Bombay, supported by C-DAC in Pune and manufactured by Datawind. To encourage adoption among students, the price has been fixed at Rs 1,130 with the government subsidising the cost by nearly a half. Aakash 2’s commercial version (Ubislate 7Ci) is available on Datawind’s site for Rs 4,300 (Wi-Fi only model) and Rs 5,000 (Wi-Fi & GPRS model). Datawind’s commercial version of the original Aakash was called UbiSlate and retailed for Rs 2,999.

Tech: iPhone 5, Android 4.1, Galaxy S III, Note 10.1 dragged into patent fight

Tech: iPhone 5, Android 4.1, Galaxy S III, Note 10.1 dragged into patent fight

A US judge on Thursday allowed Samsung Electronics to pursue claims that the iPhone 5 infringes its patents, while also allowing Apple to add claims that the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy S III and Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) operating system violate its patents.

The ruling by US Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal in San Jose, California, was the latest development in a continuing legal war by Apple against manufacturers like Samsung whose products use Google's Android software,  Representatives for both Apple and Samsung declined comment.

The case is one of two patent infringement lawsuits pending in the US District Court in San Jose by Apple against Samsung. An earlier lawsuit by Apple that related to different patents resulted in a $1.05 billion jury verdict against Samsung on August 24.

Apple filed the the second lawsuit in February, alleging that various Samsung smartphone and tablet products including the Galaxy Nexus infringed eight of its patents.

Samsung denied infringement and filed a cross-complaint alleging that Apple's iPhone and iPad infringed eight of its patents.

US District Judge Lucy Koh issued a preliminary injunction against pretrial sales of the Nexus in June. But the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit overturned the sales ban on October 11.

Following the debut of the iPhone on September 21, Samsung sought to add it as an Apple product that infringed its patents. Apple moved likewise to add the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, Samsung Galaxy S III and the Jelly Bean operating system in connection with the Galaxy Nexus.

In his ruling on Thursday, Grewal said Samsung acted with "reasonable diligence" in asking the court to allow it to add the iPhone 5 to the case.

Apple did not oppose adding the iPhone 5. Nevertheless, Grewal warned Apple to "think twice before opposing similar amendments reflecting other newly released products - eg the iPad 4 and iPad mini - that Samsung may propose in the near future."

The case is Apple Inc v Samsung Electronics Co, Ltd, et al, US District Court, Northern District of California, 12-cv-00630.

Tech : Apple iPhone owner loyalty declines in US, UK for first time

Tech : Apple iPhone owner loyalty declines in US, UK for first time

The number of iPhone owners in the UK and the US who say they are likely to buy another Apple phone has fallen for the first time since the product's launch, according to a report.

Three quarters of Western Europe's iPhone owners are likely to buy another Apple smart phone, down from 88% last year.

The research, which was conducted by Strategy Analytics, said that approximately 88 per cent of US owners are likely to buy another, down from 93%.

According to the Telegraph, the study argued that negative press has led to a decrease in consumer interest for iPhones.

"There is no doubt that Apple is continuing its success in retaining existing user base while attracting new customers," the paper quoted Paul Brown, director at Strategy Analytics' User Experience Practice, as saying.

"However, negative press prompted by a perceived lack of recent innovation by Apple has meant we are starting to see some growth in the number of previously highly loyal consumers who are now reconsidering whether or not they will purchase a new iPhone for their next device," Brown added.

Tech: Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HD 'outperform' iPad Mini display

Tech: Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HD 'outperform' iPad Mini display

A display expert echoed today what reviews have already said: the iPad Mini's display is not Apple's best display effort to date.

The Mini's display is "capable" but not great, said Raymond Soneira of DisplayMate Technologies in display "shoot-out" published today.

And, overall, it falls short of the higher resolution displays of its main rivals: the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD. "The displays on existing mini Tablets from Amazon and Google outperform the iPad mini in most of our lab tests," Soneira wrote.

And it falls short of Apple's own high standards, set by the gorgeous Retina displays on the last two generations of 9.7-inch iPads, iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5, and Retina MacBooks. "So Apple, the inventor of Retina Display marketing, now has a significant competitive shortfall on this," wrote Soneira. And this echoes CNET's take on iPad Mini's display. "If you own a recent iPhone or the last iPad, you'll feel that this screen is blurry. Text isn't as sharp. The pixels per inch don't even match what's available on a Kindle Fire HD or Nook HD," wrote CNET's Scott Stein.

Some salient critiques of the iPad Mini's display by DisplayMate :

Pixel resolution: iPad Mini has a 1,024x768 resolution with a pixel density of 163 pixels per inch (ppi). "That's now considered to be rather on the low side." The Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD are both rated at 216 ppi.
Screen reflectance: On the iPad Mini, screen reflectance "is a surprisingly high" 9 percent. On the Nexus 7 the reflectance is a much lower 5.9 percent, while on the Kindle Fire HD it is 6.4 percent. "As a result, the iPad mini reflects 53 percent more ambient light than the Nexus 7 and 41 percent more than the Kindle Fire HD."
Color gamut: The iPad Mini has an "antiquated" small 62 percent Color Gamut. The Kindle Fire HD and Google Nexus 7 both deliver a much larger 86 percent color gamut. And the iPad Mini compares even more unfavorably with iPad 3 and iPhone 5, which have full 100 percent standard Color gamuts.

But the iPad Mini's display doesn't fall flat across the board. DisplayMate gives it a "good" or "very good" rating in some key categories in the chart below.

For example, in the "Viewing Tests" category, the iPad Mini and Kindle Fire HD are rated "very good," while the Nexus is rated only "good," with notations stating that photos and videos on the Nexus 7 "have washed out color and contrast.". Essentially a reiteration of DisplayMate's previous criticism of the Nexus 7's display.

And CNET had good things to say about the Mini's aspect ratio.

Tech: How to get rid of unwanted SMSs: All you need to know

Tech: How to get rid of unwanted SMSs: All you need to know

Subscribers have been facing the menace of receiving unsolicited promotional SMSes from unregistered tele-marketers who often take the advantage of concessional SMS offers by telecom operators. In an effort to curb pesky messages from unregistered telemarketers, TRAI has come up with new measures. Here is everything that you need to know:

1. To prevent unregistered telemarketers from misusing SMS packs or tariff plans for sending bulk promotional SMSs, a price restraint has been placed on sending of more than one hundred SMS per day per SIM at a concessional rate. The subscriber is free to send SMSs beyond this number, however, all such SMSs sent beyond one hundred SMS per day per SIM shall be charged at a rate not lower than the rate prescribed by the Authority. For every SMS beyond the cap of 100 SMSes, a charge of minimum 50 paise will be applicable, the regulator said.

2. Operators have also been asked to put in place a solution within three months, which will ensure that no commercial SMS are sent having same or similar characters from any source number. The solution will ensure that no more than 200 SMS with such similar 'signature' are sent in an hour.

3. The lodging of a Unsolicited Commercial Communications (UCC) complaint through SMS has been made easier. Now the complaint can be lodged through SMS by simply forwarding the UCC SMS to 1909 after appending the telephone number and date of receipt of the SMS.

4. Access providers will also establish a web-based complaint registering system and a dedicated e-mail address to receive such complaints on UCC.

5. For increasing consumer awareness and to caution against misuse, Access providers have been mandated to send SMS to all customers on periodic basis, advising them not to send any commercial communications and informing them about the consequences of misuse.

6. Whenever a new customer is enrolled for service, the Access Provider is required to take an undertaking from such customer in the Customer Acquisition Form that he shall not use the connection for telemarketing purpose and in case he uses the connection for telemarketing purposes such connection shall be liable to be disconnected.

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal had last week said he too was a victim of the unsolicited communications. "Every two minutes I get such SMS," he had said. TRAI is taking up the issue of pesky calls and SMSes, he had added.

However, registered telemarketers, transactional message sending entities and telephone numbers exempted by TRAI are excluded from this provision, Parameswaran added.

Tech: Is Apple’s Tablet Dominance Coming to an End?

Tech: Is Apple’s Tablet Dominance Coming to an End?

Samsung’s share increased to 18.4% – the largest-ever market share for a vendor other than Apple – from 9.4% in the second quarter. Amazon, the vendor of Kindle Fire tablets, followed with a 9% share, while Taiwan’s Asustek Computer Inc. 2357.TW +0.81%, known for its Asus brand for PCs, came fourth with a 8.6% share.

Apple’s market share declined in part because some consumers were holding off their iPad purchases during the third quarter expecting Apple to release a new, smaller tablet – the iPad Mini, which went on sale last week. Although Apple only announced its plans to launch the iPad Mini last month, the media had been talking about it for a while, including a Wall Street Journal article in July.

For the fourth quarter through December, IDC expects Apple to have a “very good quarter” thanks to the new iPad Mini, which has a 7.9-inch screen, as well as the latest version of the standard 9.7-inch iPad.

Was the decline in the third quarter just a temporary slowdown for Apple? Or is the business environment getting tougher for the iPad?

Apple surely is facing more competition as the global tablet market has grown much larger and much more diverse.

Samsung – Apple’s strongest rival in the smartphone market – is trying to grab a larger share by targeting a broad range of customers with models in various sizes, colors and technological specifications. Amazon, meanwhile, is attracting customers with its affordable tablets – its latest Kindle Fire HD starts at $199 – as the company’s strategy is to make up for low margins on its hardware with sales of e-books and other products on its e-commerce platform.

When Apple unveiled the iPad Mini, some critics viewed the price tag – starting at $329 in the U.S. – as being too high. A recent teardown of the iPad Mini by research firm IHS showed that the combined cost of all components used in the new tablet came to $188.

By trying to maintain its profit margins on its devices, Apple could end up targeting a narrower segment of the fast-growing tablet market.

IDC said that the iPad Mini’s “relatively high $329 starting price leaves plenty of room for Android (tablet) vendors to build upon the success they achieved in the third quarter.”

A Mexican telecommunications firm named iFone has declared ending in an exceedingly trademark battle with Apple's iPhone, exposing the North American nation company to a possible compensation payment.
Apple introduced the iPhone to the Mexican market in 2007, four years after the Mexican telecom services and systems company says it registered the name iFone.

"It is the third time that Apple loses and this demonstrates the legal truth: iFone is within its full right to use its brand," the statement said.

The lawyer for iFone, Eduardo Gallart, was quoted as saying in Milenio newspaper on Saturday that Apple will have to compensate the Mexican company for the use of the iPhone name.

An amount has not been decided but Gallart said the law sets a floor rate of 40 percent of the sale price of a service that is found to have violated the rules.

"The Galaxy S III continues to be a runaway favourite with customers around the world," JK Shin, head of Samsung's IT and mobile communications division, said in a statement.

The third version of the Galaxy S series offers a more powerful processor that lets users watch video and write emails simultaneously as well as a large 4.8-inch (12.2-cm) screen.

The company sold 56.3 million smartphones, including its flagship Galaxy S III, in July-September, representing 31.3 percent of the global market, more than twice as much as bitter rival Apple's share, research firm IDC said last month.

Samsung and US rival Apple have been embroiled in a long-running patent battle in 10 countries, including the United States and Germany, with the pair accusing each other of stealing designs and technology.

In August Samsung was ordered to pay Apple $1.05 billion in damages for illegally copying iPhone and iPad features for its Galaxy S smartphones, but a Japanese court later rejected Apple's claim that Samsung stole its technology.

Tech: Apple's vanishing iPad

Call it the featherweight KO'ing the heavyweight. On the primary day of sales, the 312-gram mini knocked the 652-gram fourth-generation iPad into fast obscurity.
The iPad we know and love seemed to vanish yesterday.

Call it the featherweight KO'ing the heavyweight. On the first day of sales, the 312-gram Mini knocked the 652-gram fourth-generation iPad into quick obscurity.

I knew there was a problem when I had to explain to people asking me about the iPad Mini that there was also this thing called the gen 4 (gen 3.5 may actually be more accurate) iPad.

And some stores weren't exactly aware of the new iPad either. A sales rep at a certain large U.S. retail store (which will go unnamed) in Los Angeles gushed about the iPad Mini but was stumped when I asked about the gen 4 iPad.
It's the first iPad to get Apple's A6 chip -- in this case a turbocharged version called the A6X -- and every step the iPad takes toward laptop-class processing power has got my attention.

But I'm in the minority. The problem, of course, is that it looks the same as the gen 3 iPad, except for the Lightning connector.

There are other minor improvements too. The front-facing FaceTime camera has been upgraded to HD 720p video. The 4G/LTE iPad also works with a wider range of international carriers.

None of that appears to be enough to get people's attention, though.

And it's not going to get easier for Apple. With the Nexus 10 tablet, Microsoft Surface, and the crush of tablets and hybrids coming from the Windows 8 crowd, Apple is going to need to make a bold statement with the next 10-inch class iPad.

Until then, we have the incredible invisible iPad.

Tech: iPhone5 fever grips India

The world’s most-anticipated smartphone, the iPhone 5, was launched in India on Friday to grand customer reception, with its prohibitive price-tag hardly deterring diehard Apple fans. The iPhone5 is available in three memory sizes — 16 GB, 32 GB and 64GB — priced in
India at Rs. 45,500,
Rs. 52,500 and Rs. 59,500, respectively.
About 500 people jostled in a queue at south Delhi’s DLF Place mall in a smaller replay of the iPhone craze seen in the US a month ago. Actor Neha Dhupia was also present to add a touch of Bollywood to the event.

“I have been standing in queue since 4pm,” Abhishek, a Delhi University student, said after waiting for three hours to grab a prebooked 64GB version of the model. “I can’t wait to hold the phone in my hands.”

That Apple has already prebooked around 150,000 units over the past one month across India speaks volumes about the enthusiasm for its latest product.

The iPhone 5 has a 4-inch retina display and is around 20% lighter than the previous version.

“We had ordered 20,000 units of iPhone5 and all these will go to customers who have prebooked,” an Apple store manager said. He added that from Sunday onwards, the iPhone5 would be available off the shelf.

This time, the Apple phone is not being bundled with a telecom service offer and is available across retail stores.

Tech: Facebook cancels road log-in over security issues

A Facebook spokesperson aforementioned Fri that the corporate had created the road, referred to as motorcar login, to let some users go on to their pages by clicking on an internet link sent to their email addresses. Once they clicked on the link, they might get into their accounts, instead of having to travel to Facebook.com and log in.
Some of the links required users to type their passwords, while others did not, the company said.

On the website Hacker News, a technology discussion board, Matt Jones, an engineer at Facebook, said the company had offered the service for "ease of use" and never made the Web addresses "publicly available."

But they did become publicly available, as the discussion on Hacker News revealed Friday.

The Facebook spokesman, Frederic Wolens, said some users may have posted the links on the Web, allowing anyone to search for them on the Web. Those links could give a stranger access to the Facebook pages connected to them, as well as the email addresses of those users. Wolens said he had no explanation why someone would post the links.

When Facebook found the problem, it discontinued the shortcut.

The Hacker News thread said more than 1 million Facebook accounts had been affected. Facebook could not confirm that figure Friday afternoon.

TrendMicro, a private security company that offers safety tools for Facebook users, said Web address shortcuts were inherently dangerous because they could ultimately end up on the Web.

"Many, many hackers are targeting these portals because of the ubiquitous trust and use of them," said Tom Kellermann, vice president for cybersecurity at TrendMicro. He added, "You don't take shortcuts through woods in cyberspace."

The news of the security hole comes a week after a Bulgarian blogger, Bogomil Shopov, said he had bought 1.1 million Facebook users' names and email addresses on the Web for $5. He found the information for sale on a marketplace site, gigbucks.com. The items are no longer available.

Wolens of Facebook said the data had been acquired and compiled by someone who took whatever information Facebook users made public on their pages - and from other publicly available data about those users.

Kellermann of Trend Micro said the problem with the shortcut could explain how the names and email addresses that Shopov had found became public. Facebook said the security flaw and the user data for sale had nothing to do with each another.
